Given how cool and modern it feels, it’s hard to get your head around Stradom House Hotel & Spa tracing its origins to 1360. The exterior of this Michelin-rated hotel may look from outside like an 18th or 19th century Polish palace (lack of flags or signage except for a tiny plaque reinforce the feeling of a private building), but mostly the building is much older, while within it’s been brought bang up to date, a 2026 hotel of choice for visitors to Krakow seeking a prime location.

Situated between the Old Town whose market square has won the former Polish capital UNESCO World Heritage status and the grungier nightlife hub of Kazimierz, a thriving Jewish quarter back in the days when Stradom House Hotel & Spa was a mediaeval monastery, the hotel has it for both strollability and the £3 Uber rides which make getting around Krakow such a breeze. And when it comes to atmosphere, it may be the only hotel with a cocktail bar set in a former Baroque chapel, not to mention a state-of-the-art spa, above which sit special rooms with terraces which feel like a well-kept secret.

Although the journey was a little onerous – down in the elevator, along a long vaulted subterranean corridor where monks surely once wandered, then, upon reaching the spa, up a floor and looking out for a secret door leading to the room corridor – it was a delight to walk into bright, spacious and peaceful quarters in a city whose tourist numbers and student-boosted nightlife can make it feel a touch relentless.

The big difference spa rooms offer vs the heritage rooms in the main building apart from a touch more modernity is a terrace backing on to delightful planting which brings the added perk of being able to relax with coffee from the in-room Nespresso machine in your own private garden. Super-comfortable beds with tapestry-upholstered headboards are good for lounging when it’s time to come inside and catch up on news or entertainment on the giant screen TV. Although we could not make promised access to streaming services work with our own passwords, it’s promised this is a temporary glitch currently being worked out.

Bathrooms are elegantly lined with book-matched marble throughout, with big rainfall shower heads over the tub. For those like me with short arms, a bath was too difficult to draw, though, as a rigid wall beside the tub made it impossible to reach the taps or plug without getting into the bath before running it. Full marks, though, for the elegant grab rails ensuring safe passage in and out of the shower, operated by a push-button tap pre-set to optimum bathing temperature. In addition to 125 rooms and suites there’s an eye-poppingly elegant attic apartment in the roof space, the Chapel Loft.

Breakfast is served in the Gaia Italian restaurant and includes local specialities like potato pancakes with sour cream and trout cooked to order alongside eggs and other hot dishes. No sign of herring, sadly, on the cold buffet, which did have excellent salmon cured with salt from the famous local Wieliczka mine, good cheeses, copious cold cuts and plenty of salad items including decent olives. A lack of freshly-squeezed juice was made up for with smoothies reimagined and pressed fresh every day, and the bread selection was superb, with Polish-Jewish favourite challah, known locally as chalka, available every morning alongside rye and seeded loaves.

Stradomska 12, separately recognised by Michelin, is the speciality dining venue at Stradom House Hotel & Spa- expect local ingredients prepared with an innovative twist and served in nostalgic surroundings – and food is also available in smaller servings at Hedwig’s, a bar hugely popular with influencers and locals which acquires a nightclub vibe as dusk descends, especially at weekends, when a DJ rocks up, and enjoys the high domed ceiling of a former chapel.

Daytime brings its own temptations, thanks to Bakehouse 14 next to the lobby, dispensing coffee and enticing pastries – miso salted caramel cookies, anyone? – for those waiting for their Uber at one of the outdoor tables. A concierge bridging the gap between bakery and lobby makes sightseeing or booking tables at one of the city’s many fine freestanding restaurants a treat.

A full range of treatments is available at the SOL spa, which incorporates an indoor swimming pool, mixed-sex salt sauna, a slightly scary-sounding cryotherapy bath and decent-sized gym, where yoga and other activities are offered on different days – it’s important to book well ahead to reserve a place. But with all Krakow has to offer, you’re more likely to be out drinking coffee, exploring the plethora of museums and vintage shops, discovering Wawel Castle or the Wieliczka caverns where treasures as ornate as those furnishing any castle or cathedral have been carved out in salt, than perfecting your Downward Dog.
