The Nevis Mango and Food Festival takes place over 4 days every year when the fruit ripens. Officially there are over 40 different varieties on the island, although locals say it’s more like a hundred. Even the shape of Nevis looks like a mango.

The luxurious Nisbet Plantation Beach Club on Nevis’s north east coast has come a long way since Fanny Nisbet lived here. Indeed, I’m sure Britain’s naval hero Lord Nelson must have been quite taken with it each time he came to visit while he was wooing Fanny before marrying her under a giant silk tree on the island. Mind you, as most of the Nisbet team have been here for so long, it wouldn’t surprise me if they were on first name terms with the famous old Admiral.

St. Kitts and Nevis. Out of season is not out of pocket. “This” said Henry, a local resident pointing across at the elegant small park in the heart of Basseterre, St Kitts’ colonial capital, “is a sacred place”. Looking at the slight Victorian bandstand, the flowerbeds bordering the closely mown grass, I mentally asked myself why a place more typical of a family Sunday stroll could be so sacred.
