The last five years have been revolutionary for space travel. Elon Musk’s SpaceX has become the backbone of America’s access to space, with regular astronaut flights to the International Space Station, routine cargo missions, and reusable rockets thrusting space travel forward. Governments no longer have a monopoly on spaceflight, with commercial players including Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin carrying tourists to the stars, and the moon is back on the agenda with Artemis II, the first crewed flight to the moon in half a century, taking humans further into space than they have ever been before.

This resurgence of space travel is reflected in a wealth of new experiences at the home of all things cosmic, the Kennedy Space Centre, near Orlando in Florida.

Blue Origin’s New Shephard VR Experience

Jeff Bezos’ company has taken nearly 100 tourists to the stars, including household names such as Katy Perry and William Shatner. But you don’t need to pay upwards of a quarter of a million dollars to know how it feels thanks to the new virtual reality experience in the Gateway hanger at the Kennedy Space Centre.

In fact, it’s included in the price of your entry ticket. Become space crew as you climb into a 1:1 replica of the New Shephard crew capsule where, with a VR headset recreating the sights and sounds of passing the Kármán line, and your seat rumbling and rocking to simulate a real launch, you’ll find yourself fully believing in the experience. Be sure to book your time online in advance of your visit, as slots fill up.

While there, be sure to take the opportunity to create a postcard and put it in the post box next to the experience. Blue Origin will actually take it to space before sending it back to you, leaving you with a truly cosmic souvenir.

Hyperdeck Mixed-Reality Experience

Also in the area of the Gateway,  this is not just virtual but a ‘mixed reality experience,’ meaning that in addition to the VR goggles a haptic floor moves up and down and tilts and rolls to fully engage your proprioception, while gusts of wind and blasts of heat simulate the lava fields and explosions you’re navigating through.

The combined effect is so immersive it can make you forget you’re playing a game, and you might be shocked to find yourself back on earth at mission end. You’ll be armed with a haptic controller to work in teams to shoot targets if you choose the Combat Mission, but you can also select the Launch Experience or a Lunar Exploration where you collect lunar minerals to earn points.

The Hyperdeck is included in the price of your admission ticket. Again, book in advance to avoid disappointment.

The Gantry at Launch Complex 39

Opened in July 2025 this four-storey observation gantry houses a full-scale model of a rocket engine that actually bursts into life in a simulated test fire (look for the countdown timer for the next eruption). Purchase exclusive merchandise in the small shop attached to the Gantry, or learn about the third rock from the sun on wraparound screens in the Earth Information Centre, before climbing the stairs to the upper floor, from which you can see the SpaceX launch pad used for Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, and Crew Dragon missions.

On the ground there’s a viewing area for Launch Pad 39 B, so it’s no surprise that private launch experiences can be booked at the Gantry when missions are scheduled. Tickets for launch viewings are bookable online, first come first served, and sell out fast, so try early. Bear in mind that launch schedules are also subject to change up to the very last minute.

To enjoy The Gantry without viewing a launch, you’ll need to join the Kennedy Space Centre Bus Tour as it’s located beyond the security gates in a restricted space. Don’t worry, it’s included with your admission ticket, and you simply queue up at the main Visitor Complex to join one of the regular departures throughout the day. It’s a hop-on, hop-off service, so you can spend the typical 30-60 minutes at the Gantry before joining another bus to move to the next attraction.

Kennedy under the Stars

If you’ve seen the  Kennedy Space Centre once and are ready to see it in an all-new light, this could be just the ticket for you. An after-hours galactic glow party with techno DJs, glowing miniature golf under a Saturn 1B rocket, and space-themed activities like STEAM science experiments and astronaut meet and greets, while the main attractions of the Center remain open. This is a chance to see the space base as you’ve never seen it before. Under the Stars nights are held on certain dates only, so be sure to check the website in advance.

Fraggle Rock™: A Spacey adventure

A delight for younger family members – and older members who still love the Fraggles! – this live stage show in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company features Fraggles and Doozers learning about Nasa’s Artemis missions in a child-friendly way. Lots of music and physical comedy keep the energy high, and favourites from the show like Gobo and Red turn up, as well, of course, as Uncle Travelling Matt.

The show is performed twice daily, at 12.30pm and 1.45pm, and admission is included with your Space Center ticket.

Cashless Complex

Since January 2025 the entire complex has moved to cashless operations as a way to speed up service and reduce queues. You won’t be able to use cash to pay for anything, but you can obtain a free “Cash-to-Card” pre-paid card at kiosks around the Center if you don’t have a card to use. There’s a kiosk at the front entrance, one in most gift shops, another at the Imax Theatre, and one at the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

Simply feed your cash into the machine to obtain a card you can use all day. Do note that, if you leave any balance on the card, then after 92 consecutive days without use, the provider will start charging a $3.95 per month service charge to the card, until the balance reaches zero.

Project Aero

Growing quietly next to the Space Shuttle Atlantis building since May 2026, this massive (55,000 square foot – the same size as the entire White House!) mystery attraction is slated to open in 2028. Rumours are that it’s an immersive ride combined with a show. Whatever it is, the investment and the location are sure to mean it’s out of this world. NASA’s own environmental impact assessment says Project Aero is expected to increase visitors to the park by ten percent, so it’s going to be something special!
