The Winchester Hotel.  Discover An Elegant  Cape Town Classic

Sarah Kingdom checks into The Winchester Hotel, where Cape Dutch elegance meets contemporary comfort, in a place that’s rich in history, stylish, and perfectly placed on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard.

From my window at The Winchester Hotel, the sun sets in long, orange streaks over the Atlantic Ocean. Runners stride along the Sea Point promenade, and waves meet the sea wall in soft thunderous applause. At the end of the road, the public pool is emptying out, and a man selling coffee, crepes and ice cream is locking up for the night. That’s the rhythm of life here, and The Winchester, white-walled and three-storeyed, has stood through decades of it.

The Winchester Hotel is a graceful nod to Cape Town’s past and present. A grand Cape Dutch building dating back to the 1920s, a recent refurbishment has preserved its nostalgic charm, while introducing crisp modern lines and subtle elegance. The Winchester is not trying to be trendy or minimalist, it’s too timeless for that. The interiors are smart and classic – monochrome floors, arched windows, cool marble, and cascading bougainvillea that’s grown into the place. There’s a sense of scale to it all. This is a hotel with long corridors and rooms that still feel like rooms, not glass boxes.

Approach the hotel and you’re greeted by a distinctive gabled façade and black-and-white tiled public spaces. Inside, original heritage features like panelled walls and ornate ceilings sit comfortably alongside bold geometric floors and contemporary lighting

I stayed in one of the ocean-facing rooms, and from my window could watch as the sea changed colour throughout the day. The space was quiet, comfortable, well-equipped, and welcoming.

Sea Point in Motion

The Sea Point Promenade is one of my favourite bits of Cape Town. A wide, uninterrupted path, running along the oceanfront for several kilometres, where locals come to run, walk their dogs, cycle, skate, or sit. The Winchester opens directly onto it. You can walk all the way to the Mouille Point Lighthouse in one direction or to the famous Clifton beaches in the other. On weekends, it’s full of life. On weekday mornings, after the runners have headed off to their office jobs, it’s pretty peaceful.

There’s plenty of good coffee nearby, a market on Sundays, and a new wave of restaurants, boutiques and other shops, all within walking distance. While the Winchester Hotel offers complimentary shuttle service to the V&A Waterfront, making it easy to reach the malls, the Two Oceans Aquarium, Robben Island ferries, and artisan markets, I’ve always found little reason to leave Sea Point once I’ve arrived.

Food and Fire

Dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, Shoreditch, is built around open-fire cooking. Seared tuna, ribeye steak, flame-roasted lamb chops, with a selection of fish, seafood and vegetarian options as well. It’s straightforward food, well-sourced and confidently cooked. The menu leans local, and the service is knowledgeable. There’s no attempt to overcomplicate, the flavours do the work.

Breakfast is served either indoors or in the courtyard, which has a Mediterranean feel. It’s one of those places where you lose track of time: fresh pastries, local cheeses, warm bread, hot dishes made to order, and very good coffee. It’s hard to drag yourself away.

Harvey’s Bar, facing the sea and overlooking the promenade, is the place for a pre-dinner drink, particularly around sunset. There’s a short snack menu if you’re not in the mood for a full meal, a clever cocktail list, and the staff are happy to suggest a delicious local wine or gin.

Leisure & Wellness

Beyond its private pool area, with deck and loungers, and a well-equipped gym, with plunge pool, sauna, steam room, hot-tub and relaxation area, there’s a spa where luxurious treatments, from rejuvenating massages to various skincare rituals, will restore your inner balance.

The Feel of the Place

What stands out, more than the location or the view or even the food, is the way the hotel makes you feel. It’s not trying too hard. The service is efficient, but super friendly and relaxed, and the building itself, with its high ceilings and thick walls, has a calmness that’s hard to manufacture.

Cape Town is full of great hotels, but The Winchester offers something a little different. It’s part of the neighbourhood, not just perched on the edge of it. It’s an excellent base for a Cape Town stay; it’s close to the action, but not in the thick of it. Take a walk before breakfast, stop for a coffee, return for a swim, and feel like you’ve found your home away from home in this quietly refined gam on Cape Town’s Atlantic seaboard.
