Arriving in Vilanculos you quickly sense a shift. A long sandy beach and fishing boats that come and go with the tide, this is a place designed to make you slow down. Where the gentle rhythm of coastal Mozambique sets the pace. Vilanculos itself is a small town on the Indian Ocean, known best as the jumping-off point for the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine National Park, a protected area with a cluster of islands, clear waters, coral reefs, and diverse marine life, including dolphins, dugongs, whale sharks, and tropical fish.

In Vilanculos, fishing boats line the shore, markets bustle with fruit sellers, and sandy tracks lead down to the water. Just a little north of town is Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel. Hidden amongst tropical foliage and cashew trees, on a rise above the beach, the hotel has views across the water to the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. The welcome is warm, relaxed and genuine. A cool drink, a quick check-in, and then the wonderful sea breeze, which reminds you why people travel this far.

The hotel has been designed to take full advantage of its vantage point. Our suite opened onto a private terrace and a small plunge pool, with nothing between us and the ocean save a sweep of beach and the shifting tides. Inside, the look was contemporary but restrained, with clean lines and natural tones, so that your eye was always drawn back to the ocean. The sound of the waves was never far away.

Bahia Mar offers several room choices. Sea-view rooms open out to wide balconies where the horizon fills the frame. Garden suites sit shaded in tropical vegetation, giving a sense of privacy and calm. The beach suites feel more like small homes, complete with kitchenettes, outdoor terraces, and pools. Whichever you choose, you’re never far from the beach and turquoise water.

The heart of the hotel is the infinity pool, which seems to pour into the sea beyond. Beside it, the restaurant serves meals throughout the day. Food here focuses on what is fresh and available. Breakfast is unhurried, with tropical fruit, breads, and fresh juices. Lunch is light, often a salad or grilled fish, while dinner allows the chef to add some additional Mozambican flourishes, with seafood as the star. There’s a genuine focus on what’s fresh and local, with much of the produce coming from nearby fishermen and farmers, giving the menu an authenticity you can taste.

Beyond the dining table, Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel has made wellness central to its identity. Days can begin with yoga in the garden or end with a massage in the spa, and there’s a gym for those wanting to keep fit. The atmosphere encourages a slower pace; whether you choose to swim, meditate, or simply sit with a book while the tide ebbs and flows.

Activities are easily arranged through the lodge. Snorkelling or diving on Two Mile Reef reveals an explosion of colour beneath the surface. Or boat trips across to the Bazaruto islands, where the sand is dazzlingly white and the water as clear as glass. Horse rides along the beach or visits to local villages offer other ways to engage with the place. You can be as active or as restful as you choose – it’s a balance of adventure and rest, as much or as little as you want.

Something that really sets Bahia Mar apart is its commitment to sustainability. This is the only hotel in Mozambique certified by Fair Trade Tourism, a recognition that speaks to fair wages, local sourcing, and environmental care. This is not a label for show, but a principle woven into daily operations. Waste is sorted, recycled, or composted, plastics are minimised, and indigenous plants are used in the gardens to save water and provide natural shade.

Guests are encouraged to join in reforestation efforts through the lodge’s “Roots for the Future” programme, which plants a tree for nearly every guest who stays. The hotel also supports a local preschool and contributes to conservation work protecting Mozambique’s fragile seahorse population. Regular beach clean-ups invite both staff and guests to play a role in protecting the very environment that draws people here in the first place.

Bahia Mar is more than just a hotel on the beach. It’s a place to rest, a base for exploring one of Mozambique’s most beautiful coastlines, and an opportunity to support a lodge that takes sustainability seriously. The setting is beautiful, and one of the highlights of my stay was sitting, coffee in hand, watching the dawn break over the archipelago from my own private terrace. It doesn’t get much better than that.
