Restaurant at the Randolph

Randolph MacDonald Hotel 006274

The restaurant team were all looking a little smug as we were shown to our table at Restaurant at the Randolph, and rightly so considering the restaurant had just been awarded its third AA rosette. Some accomplishment from a kitchen brigade committed to serving only British sourced fresh ingredients. It helps of course if your owners hail from Scotland (especially when salmon is on the menu) and Macdonald Hotels and Resorts has collected over 40 AA rosettes across all its properties.

Montague hotel 5

The Montague on the Gardens tucked away a stone’s throw from the leafy environs of Russell Square, may be not enjoy the celebrity status of some of Red Carnation’s top tier of properties, such as The Milestone for example, but has enough of owner Beatrice Tollman’s trademark artworks and fancy knick knacks about it to leave no doubt of its provenance. It is a stylish boutique hotel with all the hallmarks of Red Carnation’s service and its snug AA Rosette winning Blue Door Bistro is certainly an eatery worthy of a mention.

I am in an express elevator and in less than 30 seconds whisked 121 meters (400 feet) above the streets of London to the 33rd level where Hutong at The Shard awaits. Stepping out to the mezzanine overlooking the busy bar and through the full height windows, across the Thames to St Pauls and along to the London Eye I remind myself there is still some 187m (508ft) to the top of this stunning skyscraper.

Some cheese snobs might argue you can’t beat a strong stilton, a runny brie or a creamy camembert, but sorry cheese snobs you most surely can. England can proudly boast a fine cheese-making heritage and you won’t find a better example than Ford Farm cheeses. Smoked cheese has never tasted so good.

Tucked away in a cul-de-sac in London’s Mayfair, lies a Georgian town house with a hell of a history.  The St. James’s Hotel and Club has been the haunt of the rich and famous for over 150 years from Churchill to Sean Connery. But tucked away inside the tucked away hotel is a success story that has taken just 12 months to emerge; Seven Park Place by William Drabble.

Roux at The Landau

rouxThe Landau1

Considering it was a Thursday night, spare tables at Roux at The Landau, the signature restaurant at The Langham Hotel in Portland Place were few and far between. Perhaps it was a busy night at the BBC studios just opposite, or perhaps the draw of the 5 course tasting menu for £65 was too irresistible.
