Lynne Coates embarks on a ‘Quiet Season’ cruise onboard the Viking Sky for a Journey to Antiquities.

Quality time with my sister is precious, as she lives in Glasgow and I’m in Yorkshire, so a ‘Quiet Season’ Viking cruise, ‘Journey to Antiquities’ itinerary, was ideal for us both.   We arrive safely in Athens, unlike my suitcase, which lost a wheel and developed a gaping hole, more on that later.

Warmly greeted by the Viking representative we are efficiently transferred to our ship. Having sailed on Viking River ships before, I was looking forward to cruising on one of their Ocean ships, and Viking Sky exceeded expectations. The ship is stunning, understatedly luxurious, with beautifully crafted furnishings and tasteful contemporary décor.

I love the elegant Scandi style of our Veranda Stateroom, with soft grey and cream décor and pale wood furniture. Our compact bathroom is perfectly designed, with a generously-sized shower, shelves and drawers provide plenty of space for both our toiletries. Viking sky carries just 930 passengers, in modern cruise ship terms its classed as small, making it easy to navigate. We set off to explore.

All Viking ships have beautifully curated art collections, and on Viking Sky we see original works by the famous Norwegian artist, Edvard Munch, and photographer Alistair Miller. Hanging above stairwells, are beautiful reproductions of Bayeux tapestries, referencing Viking’s Scandinavian heritage. The stunning central atrium, is the hub of the ship, where guests relax and enjoy listening to the resident pianist. We head up to deck 7 where Explorers Lounge is the perfect spot for pre-dinner drinks, followed by dinner in World Café where, in a nod to our destination, it’s a ‘Taste of Greece’ buffet.

Athens

Docked in Athens, we have a choice of tours, and decide on ‘Acropolis & Plaka district by foot’.  One of the many advantages of travelling mid-season is that attractions like the Acropolis are far less crowded, plus a cooler time of the year is preferable for sight-seeing.   We follow our guide, Rula, up the ancient steps to the magnificent monuments on Acropolis Hill.  Rula gives us a captivating account of their history and extraordinary architecture.  Afterwards, with free time, we explore the lively Plaka district. Back on board, Viking Sky sets sail for Turkey.  We enjoy a superb dinner in Manfredi’s, the   Italian restaurant, my favourite cuisine.

Ephesus

Docked in Kusadasi, we take the included tour to Ephesus.  It’s impossible not to be impressed by this UNESCO World Heritage site. We navigate our way down the ancient, cobbled pathways as our knowledgeable guide’s descriptive narrative brings to life stories of this remarkably preserved city, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. She points out engravings including a marble relief of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, now associated with the sportswear brand.

We pass ruins of the Temple of Artemis, arriving at the colonnaded Library of Celsus, a breathtaking sight. Returning to Kusadasi, we visit a Turkish carpet factory, where we observe the process of production, from silk worms to skilful weaving.  Resisting the temptation to buy a rug, we head instead for the handbag shops.

Crete

Our next destination, Crete, is one of my favourite Greek islands.  We take the included tour, ‘Scenic Chania by foot’, an easy stroll through the old town and its beautiful Venetian Harbour. We visit a Byzantine Church, and discover an ancient synagogue.  After the tour, with free time we wander off to see the 15thcentury lighthouse and the naval museum. With far less tourists than in the summer, Chania is so much more enjoyable.

Sea Day

I love sea days, with time to relax we enjoy a leisurely breakfast in Mamsen’s open-all-day buffet (their delicious cakes become a daily afternoon treat!).   I head off to get in some steps round the deck, it was a fairly gusty experience, but worth it for the endless seascape.  With guest lecturers on board sea days are an opportunity to take in some interesting talks, I enjoy an informative lecture on Sicily.

It’s also the perfect time to visit the fabulous Nordic Spa. I try the Scandinavian ritual of hot and cold jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, but opt-out of the ice plunge and snow grotto – I have limits!  Afterwards I have an invigorating massage, while my sister has a facial, we both emerge glowing, and head off for afternoon tea in the Wintergarden – the delights of cruising!

Sicily

We dock in Messina, where the city centre is just a short walk from the port. Our included tour begins with a drive around the outskirts of the city. Our guide, Katerina, explains how  Messina was almost completely destroyed by a tsunami caused by a catastrophic earthquake in1908. The epicentre was under the Strait of Messina, and we stop for that viewpoint.

Returning to the city, we visit the famous Duomo di Messina, and the astronomical clock which, in action at midday, is a fascinating sight. That night we dine with new friends in The Restaurant, where they serve regional dishes, paired with an excellent wine choice. We end the evening in the Star Theatre, where we are entertained by the talented, Lindsay Hamilton, who brilliantly combines music with humour.

Naples

For me the best came last. I love Naples! It’s not pretty, but it oozes Italian character.  Wandering through the alleyways of the Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish Quarter), every blink is a photograph. We take the walking tour with Vinzenzo, whose enthusiasm for the city is infectious. As he boasts about Neapolitan life I’m inclined to agree with him.  We stop for a traditional Sfogliatelle and espresso in Galleria Umberto and then have free time.

By chance its Black Friday, we struggle with all our bags back to the ship, and wonder how we will fit everything in our cases. Speaking of which, my damaged suitcase has appeared having been magically repaired by the onboard carpenter – Viking cruises truly go above and beyond!
