Cold plunges, mountain views and no surprise add-ons: Annie Hayes reviews three of the best Austrian Tyrol wellness hotels worth knowing about.
The Austrian Tyrol is one of Europe’s best kept secrets. The Best Alpine Wellness Hotels (BAWH) offers a guarantee of quality for where to stay – a collection of curated four and five-star properties nestled in breathtaking alpine surroundings, each family-run and with its own individual stamp wrapped in authentic and charming, ‘old-school’ service.
The region is also a short hop from London. My flight from Heathrow to Munich took just under two hours, followed by a two-hour drive to the first hotel. Additional routes are available from Innsbruck, Salzburg, Zurich and Memmingen. The BAWH motto – “Everything That Matters, Already Included” – might sound a little earnest, but knowing there are no surprise add-ons makes for a genuinely relaxing break. For families, this includes kids’ clubs with impressively long opening hours at most hotels.
Wellnessresidenz Alpenrose

A five-star hotel sitting directly on the shores of Lake Achensee, with walking and cycling routes. The Kostenzer family have created something warm and unhurried, staff take their time and your experience feels considered rather than processed. With 122 rooms there are options for different budgets, starting from €263pp and rising to €379pp for the Cocoon luxury spa suite. Pine panelling, gingham blankets and well-upholstered armchairs give the rooms an alpine heritage that feels genuine rather than designed.

The hotel is generous with the small details. E-bikes are free for the first three hours, lunch runs from 1pm to 4pm – ideal for hungry teenagers who want to graze local and international dishes, fresh juices and a generous multi-course dinner. There is an Aladdin’s cave of a boutique for shoppers, and 8,000 square metres of spa space including a panoramic pool that makes the most of the lake views.
A particular highlight was the sauna followed by a cold plunge in the natural outdoor pond – swimming among reeds with the mountains offering a jaw-dropping backdrop.
Of the three hotels this is the best for active multigenerational families, offering the amenities of a large resort wrapped in the feel of a boutique alpine hotel.
Hotel Post Lermoos

A four-star hotel sitting at 1,000 metres in the heart of the Tyrol, with views that stop you in your tracks. From the terrace, evenly spaced traditional wooden huts frame the Zugspitze – Germany’s highest peak – in a landscape so perfectly composed it looks painted. In winter the Wettersteinbahnen Ehrwald ski area is on the doorstep; when the snow melts, alpine hikes, mountain lakes and cycling routes take over. The year-round appeal is genuine and the proximity to the ski area also makes it a great winter option, while summer brings a gondola ride to the peak.
Rooms are generous and classically alpine in style, with exceptionally comfortable beds and balconies that give you the view from the moment you wake up. The food is very much part of the appeal – a substantial buffet breakfast of eggs, cheeses, yoghurts and muesli, and an evening menu running from appetiser and salad bar through to a choice of meat, fish or vegetarian main, puddings and cheese.

The spa holds its own against any five-star property: indoor and outdoor pools, a hot whirlpool, cold plunge pool, bio sauna, herbal steam bath and a Tyrolean sweat room. The outdoor saltwater pool frames those exceptional mountain views, and the infrared cabin rounds off a facility that punches well above its star rating.
For something more secluded, the hotel’s private hunting lodge – accessible by car or a beautiful walk through untouched woodland – offers a rustic hideaway ideal for couples, writers or anyone wanting to press pause on life entirely. Sitting on the terrace you can look out over the Ganghofer Jagd hunting ground and spot deer through the telescope. Rates start from €256pp. The hotel also runs adult-only weekends for those seeking a peaceful escape from the world.
Of the three, this is the best for views, a cocooning getaway and an exceptional food experience.
Hotel Schwarz

Located on the Mieming Plateau, Hotel Schwarz is a five-star hotel and it is easy to see why. For those seeking a serious wellness break the treatments are unparalleled and on price, many are considerably more accessible than you might expect. Cryotherapy, in a chamber reaching temperatures as low as -85°C, is €48.
The offering spans deep skin therapy through to more considered treatments including plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. This is a longevity resort with wellbeing at its absolute core. The spa is vast – so much so that finding your way around, with different banks of lifts serving different parts of the hotel, takes a little getting used to, though the staff are always on hand to point you in the right direction.
The 300 sqm fitness club offers first-class training equipment and a wide range of classes. I attended a reformer Pilates session as a complete beginner and was led through the exercises with care and excellent guidance.
Cyclists are well catered for too, with the latest mountain bikes, e-bikes and children’s versions all available. Whatever activity you choose, the Schwarz ensures families can enjoy it together.

Outside, the hotel blends seamlessly into its surroundings. For children there are climbing walls, play parks and a petting zoo, all neatly tucked away so that adults seeking quiet can easily find it. The infinity pool, with its panoramic mountain views and sun loungers stretching out beside it, is reason enough to visit on its own. The bathrooms have an edge over the other hotels – each one has a sauna built into the shower, a detail that feels genuinely luxurious rather than merely gimmicky. Rates range from €269 to €349pp.
Hotel Schwarz is high-end in every sense and the food matches the wellness offering. Family-owned, it retains that attention to detail that can so easily get lost in a hotel of this size. There is something here for everyone – skiers, foodies, wellness devotees, golfers, families and those who simply want to read a book and be looked after. The silence rooms are a particularly wonderful option for the latter.
This is without doubt the best hotel for high-end luxury and next-level wellness offerings.
Sauna infusions – a ritual worth knowing about
All three hotels offer sauna infusion sessions – a ritual combining heat, aromatherapy and deep relaxation, led by a sauna host who wafts large towels to intensify the temperature in waves. The benefits include detoxification, improved blood circulation and relief from muscle tension. For groups it is a genuinely fun and memorable shared experience, though it is worth knowing in advance that swimwear is not permitted at the sauna infusions in any of the three hotels. Towels can be draped, but most guests simply go without.
Beyond the hotels
The surrounding region offers more than most visitors expect too. The area is steeped in culture and history – the extraordinary Swarovski Kristallwelten, the factory-museum famed for its crystals, is well worth a visit, as are the magnificent Ambras and Tratzberg castles. But sometimes the greatest pleasure is simply sitting still and staring at the views, which in the Tyrol is never a disappointment.
While you are here, make sure to try kaiserschmarrn – a light, torn pancake made from flour, eggs and milk, unique to the Tyrol and closely linked to the Habsburg monarchy. Legend has it that Emperor Franz Joseph was so fond of the pastry that it became embedded in the region’s culinary identity. Apple strudel, sweet and warmly spiced, is available at all three hotels and is equally delicious.
