Sarah Kingdom Visits asDunas Lodge In Vilanculos Mozambique And Discovers A Well-Crafted Coastal Hideaway Where Comfort And Simplicity Go Hand In Hand
Driving north out of Vilanculos town, the road turns from tar to sand. Palm trees arch overhead, and the Indian Ocean starts to peek out between the coastal scrub. Twenty minutes later, I arrive at asDunas Lodge, a clifftop beachfront hideaway, set among red dunes and bush.
At first glance, it’s the simplicity that stands out. There’s no grand entrance, no marble lobby, just thatched roofs, wooden decks, and the sea stretching out ahead. It doesn’t feel like a resort. It feels more like arriving at someone’s private beach house.
The Lodge
There is something quiet and special about asDunas Lodge. Tucked into red coastal dunes just north of Vilanculos, this eight-suite retreat is small enough to feel private, yet it feels very generous in spirit. This is not a grand resort, but rather a sanctuary designed for rest, reflection, and connection with the sea.
asDunas Lodge is owner-run, and it shows. The design is pared-back but thoughtful. Each of the six tented suites and two cottages has been carefully placed to preserve the native vegetation, and feature a private plunge pool, a large deck area, and uninterrupted views out over the turquoise Indian Ocean. The architecture is simple: natural timber, canvas, stone floors, and large glass doors.

The tents blend into the surrounding scrub thickets and sand dunes, rather than dominating them. Nothing here is flashy, but everything works. There’s no television or minibar clutter, what you’ll find, though, is everything you need to be comfortable, and not much more, which, in this setting, is just right. In addition, the lodge’s small size means total attention is given to each guest, unlike at a bigger resort.
Location, Location, Location
asDunas Lodge is perched above a stretch of undeveloped coastline, about 12km north of Vilanculos airport. The lodge looks out towards the Bazaruto Archipelago, with unbroken views of sand, reef, islands, and sea. Rise early, and the wooden deck of your safari-style tent reveals a shimmering panorama of islands hovering on the horizon, like a mirage, and sandbanks glinting of gold.

The beach here is wild and mostly empty; you can walk for miles without meeting a soul. You’ll see the occasional fisherman passing by, or local people gathering shellfish, but most of the time it’s just you, the sand, and the sea breeze. A short walk from the lodge leads up to a higher dune, where sundowners are often served with a view.
Food & Italian Soul with a Mozambican Twist
The culinary heart of asDunas Lodge is unapologetically Mediterranean, with the roots of its Italian owners meeting the local Mozambican bounty. Breakfasts are served outdoors on the deck, and lunches feature homemade pastas and pizzas. Dinner is the main event, with a five-course set menu that changes daily. One night, I had prawns with coconut rice, another, homemade tagliatelle, followed by grilled calamari. The food reflects the owners’ Italian roots, but always with local ingredients and a Mozambican slant.
The wine list is predominantly Italian, but chilled for the tropical climate, and the cocktails are infused with local flavours and served by the pool or at sunset on the dunes. There’s no background music or theme nights, just the sound of the waves.

Wellness and Slow-Living
asDunas Lodge brands itself as “a spa within itself.” Wellness pavilions offer complimentary treatments: full-body massages, meditation sessions, yoga, gym, and even dance. Products are natural, alcohol-free, and sourced locally—think aloe vera and coconut oil
This is not a clinical wellness retreat, there are no bootcamps or detox menus, just rest and the time to take things slow. Start your day with a sunrise yoga session or simply lounge by your private plunge pool. The pace here is unhurried, calm and focused on wellness.
Activities & the Sea
It’s not just beach days and spa days here. The lodge will happily facilitate excursions into the nearby Bazaruto Archipelago National Park for snorkelling, island picnics, dhow sails, whale watching, and fishing. Nearby horse‑riding along the beach is an option, as are guided visits to the local market and cultural visits and cooking sessions in neighbouring villages. Alternatively, take a beach walk along ten kilometres of beach, accessed via a private stairway from the lodge. With no clipboard of schedules or over-orchestrated itineraries, activities here are tailored to what guests actually want to do.

Who It’s For
asDunas Lodge is not budget-backpackery nor ultra-luxury glitz, rather it’s a comfortable, eco-minded coastal retreat. This is not a place for nightlife or high-speed anything; there’s no kids’ club or group excursions. It’s quiet, adult-oriented, and ideal for couples or solo travellers looking for space, comfort, and calm. Occupancy is capped at 16 guests, so even at full capacity, it feels peaceful. You can socialise if you want, or barely see another person all day. Most guests come to unwind after a safari, and many extend their stay once they arrive.
The Final Verdict
What asDunas Lodge offers is simple: well-designed rooms, good food, total privacy, and one of the best stretches of coast in Mozambique.
