ARBUTUS LONDON

Arbutus interior

Arbutus London is that rare thing, a Michelin-starred restaurant in casual dress. It’s as much a place to relax and have a good time over an interesting glass of wine as to enjoy gutsy food with big flavours. No tablecloths and minimal decor, with slightly incongruous butcher-block tables playing against mirrored glass in the back room and stunning urban photography in the cheerier front parlour. There’s no fuss, just friendly and professional service, with chef as likely to serve your food himself as the waiters.

West Thirty Six interior 2

It looks like a club, it feels like a club, but West Thirty Six is that rare thing, a public restaurant with all the intimate ambience of a private club.
The fact it’s in Golborne Road is both a blessing and a curse. For those in the know, this is a charming and happening west London thoroughfare which has undergone massive gentrification in the past decade.

BANDOL LONDON RESTAURANT

Dining Booths at Bandol

Bandol London restaurant is what lovers of Provence have been waiting for – a restaurant which showcases the food of that region, under-represented in UK restaurants, and many of the lovely wines for which the South of France is regaining  a reputation.   It would be nice if it also looked the part, but despite the token olive tree, this casual restaurant off the Fulham Road is a little hard-edged with its copper bar and trimmings, though the three semi-circular booths are comfy, while private parties have the slightly surreal option of a pair of mesh-walled cages.

Artesian at The Langham London

“Your room or mine?” Carla asks me straight out, in the middle of the Langham London’s Artesian. I make a mental note to test her other preferences as soon as humanly possible before succumbing to her proposal. Well let’s be honest, how can you resist 15 year old Glenfiddich, Becherovka and Pineau des Charentes served in a furry cup?.

Engawa dishes

To say the china was as memorable as the food could be a veiled insult when applied to a lesser restaurant.   But the spectacular Engawa, filling a niche for high-end Japanese dining in the heart of Soho, is as much a feast as much for the eyes as the tastebuds.
