The Lakeside Hotel.  Lake District

Lakeside

It seems The Lakeside Hotel can cure all ills. Just lately I’ve noticed myself growing a little grumpy about hotels. Twenty years on the road as a travel writer have turned the old excitement of walking into a new and different foyer and sleeping in cool clean sheets into a grouchy wariness. Add to that the advent of the designer hotel and these days I’ve found myself snarling my way through the revolving doors. I’ve had my share of sliding off armchairs that looked like Dali’s ”melting” clocks or hitting my head on oversized ’ironic’ chandeliers in cold, unwelcoming dining rooms decorated in the requisite charcoal and grey. And I’m tired of  trying to make myself heard in the cacophonous acoustic of bars with stripped pine floors and formica.

A cold December day, but the welcome sign in the lobby of the Milestone Hotel warms our hearts, “please help yourself to our complimentary hot chocolate, marshmallows and chocolates.”  Now that’s what I call the perfect hello.

Macdonald Randolph Hotel

Randolph MacDonald

For some reason, visiting Oxford always intimidates me a little. Perhaps it’s the smell of world class academia that does it; history, knowledge and discovery purveying every pore of the city. Maybe I just sense that everyone here is a lot brighter than me. Thankfully, as I arrived at Macdonald Randolph Hotel I was greeted like a long lost friend; not hint of superiority anywhere. Now my imagination was running riot. Perhaps with my shabby chic look they thought I was a visiting college lecturer, perhaps a world expert in paleontology, with the Ashmolean Museum just opposite?

Moorland Garden Hotel. Dartmoor

The white, sprawled out, Moorland Garden Hotel is situated 20 minutes out of Plymouth in the beautiful Dartmoor National Park.  As I drove up the long drive the surrounds were really impressive.  After all it had been the byword in glamour when it first opened in the 1930’s, with visitors’ ranging from President Truman to David Niven.

THE VALLEY. A Cornish Country Retreat

Taking the dog to Cornwall in the summer hols can be a tricky proposition.   Many hotels and cottages don’t accept canines, and several beaches ban man’s best friend from the sands from June to September.
The Valley is a good bet for both its location and the management’s superior intelligence.

THE FRENCH HORN. SONNING-ON-THAMES

The French Horn ducks on the spit

There are hotels and restaurants which continually fall over themselves to update their rooms and menus – and many others whose loyal clientèle tells them: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Judging by the packed dining room on a rainy midweek afternoon out of season, The French Horn has wisely decided to adopt the latter course. You could be tempted to think almost nothing had changed in the 40 years since the Leventhal family took over this lovely old Thameside inn at Sonning.

Flemings Mayfair Hotel. London.

Half Moon Street is like many others of its kind in London’s Mayfair; a row of fabulous Georgian town houses lining both sides of it. However, take a stroll through the front entrance of Flemings Mayfair Hotel and you’ll experience something quite different. Something unlike any of its neighbours. Almost as if you’ve suddenly warped into a different dimension.

St. James’s Hotel and Club. London

Executive room home

I love a bit of history, and walking up to the front entrance of the St.James’s Hotel and Club (which ironically began as a Travellers Club for diplomats back in 1857), I reminded myself of all the previous owners and former members of this fine piece of luxury Georgian real estate in the heart of London’s Mayfair. Ian Fleming, Winston Churchill and in 1980 Peter De Savary and his show biz investors: Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Tim Rice, Dudley Moore, Liza Minelli and Pete Townsend. Heady days.
