That La Quinta Inn & Suites should be the first new hotel built in 10 years in San Luis Obispo beggars belief.
It’s Tuscany, but not as we know it. For one thing, despite its wealth of ochre walls, fountains and terracotta, the Allegretto Vineyard Resort is in the middle of small-town America, surrounded by plain buildings selling farm machinery rather than Italianate olive groves and wineries which have produced Sangiovese for centuries.
The solar powered lights of the legendary Ferris wheel have just come on as I look out at Santa Monica Pier. It is quite the spectacle, made all the more memorable from my perch on the rooftop bar of Hotel Shangri-La seven storey’s up.
Clouds of star dust hover over the deliciously eccentric Ingleside Inn in Palm Springs, one of the most authentic boutique hotels on the planet that dates back to the Golden days of Hollywood. Chilling out on the swing veranda seat, exploring grounds whose romantic villas hide behind lush vegetation or lounging at the secluded poolside you are more of a cherished private house guest than a hotel customer.
I have to admit I was feeling a little star struck. One minute I was standing next to this fabulous Albert Frey designed mid century modern wing of the Movie Colony Hotel and the next, I’m finding out it had real celebrity history.

Does it get any better? It does if you can enjoy a relaxing luxury spa after your round.
