FAIRMONT LE MONTREUX PALACE

Montreux Palace exterior

Freddie Mercury lived there while looking for a home in Switzerland, Vladimir Nabokov used the proceeds of Lolita to fund a permanent suite and Deep Purple recorded Smoke on the Water in its lake-side pavilion.   There may not be a more celebrity-studded hotel in Switzerland than the Montreux Palace, arguably the country’s most glamorous hostelry.

02 Riu Palace Tenerife

What gin would I like for my G & T?   The list is long and after a time I finally opt for Miller’s with lemon zest, orange slices and fennel seeds.   It’s refreshing, but by far the best part is drinking it on the terrace of  the Hotel Riu Palace Tenerife overlooking the sea on, a warm November evening.

“Cold towel sir?”  Is the perfect way to introduce a good feeling as far as I am concerned as I check in to the Jumeirah Lowndes Hotel on a hot Knightsbridge day. My good feel factor is lifted all the more as a coffee materialises next to my couch to keep me company as i wait a couple of minutes for the room to be ready.

Jumeirah Carlton Tower. Knightsbridge

jumeirah carlton tower chinoiserie 01 hero

There are many advantages to be had for a hotel based in Knightsbridge and the Jumeirah Carlton Tower makes the most of all of them. Harvey Nichols and Harrods practically on the doorstep, the designer shops on Sloane Street a mere stone’s throw away and those lovely leafy lanes away from the main drag to wander down. But the 18 floors of the Jumeirah Carlton Tower offer something else too; one of the most spectacular views you can get across London.

PORTOBELLO HOTEL. London

Portobello Drawing Room

It’s as close as you’ll get to sleeping in the same bed as Johnny Depp and Kate Moss.   Like other A-listers, including members of The Rolling Stones, they are former habitues of the Portobello Hotel.
Not that you’d ever guess, from the looks of this utterly genteel hostelry a stone’s throw from Portobello market.   It’s every bit the gracious Victorian house, the very antithesis of a rock’n’roll hangout.   Only a small brass plaque distinguishes it from its white stucco neighbours in this quiet enclave off Ladbroke Grove an eight-minute stroll from Notting Hill Gate.

Castello del Nero Front View

It’s just what you hope for when you book a five-star hotel in Tuscany.   A 12th century castle adapted for modern comforts with a Michelin-starred restaurant to boot.    Castello del Nero offers all this, plus a world-class ESPA spa and a rustic taverna where dining is actually more enjoyable than in the formal room next door.

Quinta Bonita. Lagos.

quinta bonita 003

I’m having breakfast at Quinta Bonita and watching hens wandering around in front of me on an immaculate lawn. Playing match my breakfast egg with that hen is a fun diversion for a few seconds, but owners Chantelle and Fraser have to play it for real every day as they wander the grounds of Quinta Bonita searching for those freshly laid  eggs. “They could be anywhere” says Chantelle “but we always try their favourite spots first.”

Eduardo is a bit quick off the mark at the Langham Club private check in. As soon as I cross the threshold of the third floor foyer there’s a cool drink in my hand, a towel at my side and a beaming smile in front of me.
