Opened in the early part of the 20th century, the Waterhead Hotel, south of Ambleside, was one of a new ‘breed’ of hotels purpose-built to accommodate the rising tide of affluent tourists to the Lake District.
Combining cosiness and comfort with jaw-dropping grandeur is a hard act to pull off, but the Lygon Arms, queen of all Cotswolds hotels, achieves it with considerable panache.
